Molds can become very complicated, any number of things related to mold design and part design can reduce effective
life of a mold. Several examples are:
- Mold designs containing movable components such as mechanical or hydraulically operated sliding cores

- Parts that are insert molded. Items that are material or design related could include glass filled materials or other fillers that can be abrasive and shorten tool life
